Meet The Team
Dr Ellen Larsen
Ellen Larsen is a Senior Lecturer (Curriculum and Pedagogy) in the School of Education at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) since 2016. She commenced working in Initial Teacher Education after a long career as a classroom teacher, school leader, and mentor in state and independent schools. She has also worked as Manager (Teaching and Learning) at Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ), developing and implementing research-based professional learning programs across Queensland with teachers at all career stages. With research interests in professional learning, early career educators, teacher identity, and educational policy, Ellen is particularly committed to working with schools to develop quality mentoring programs in the contemporary teaching context.


Dr Elizabeth Curtis
Dr Elizabeth Curtis is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of the Bachelor of Education at the University of Southern Queensland. Elizabeth’s qualitative research is grounded in pre-service teacher education and beginning teachers and includes professional experience, mentoring, philosophical inquiry, and values and care in education as her main research interests. Elizabeth has worked and researched both individually and as part of teams nationally in Australia as well as internationally. Elizabeth has vast experience in not only teaching and researching but also in leading program innovation and change across Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary contexts at two Australian universities.
Associate Professor Hoa Nguyen
Dr Hoa Thi Mai Nguyen is an Associate Professor and Post-Graduate Research Coordinator in the School of Education at the University of New South Wales, specialising in teacher education/development, mentoring, and TESOL. She has experience teaching and training pre-service and in-service teachers in Asia and Australia. She works extensively with teachers to develop their capabilities as mentors and has a strong commitment and passion to develop teachers’ professional learning. She has also held visiting and honorary positions at University of Sydney, Kings’ College London, University of Leeds, and University of Oxford.


Associate Professor Tony Loughland
Tony Loughland is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School (Research) in the School of Education at the University of New South Wales. Tony is an experienced educator who likes to work with teachers to work with theory in ways that enhance practice. His research interests lie in teacher professional learning across the continuum from graduate to lead teacher. Tony is currently leading projects on using AI for citizens’ informed participation in urban development, the provision of staffing for rural and remote areas in NSW, and Graduate Ready Schools.
Dr Melissa Fanshawe
Dr Melissa Fanshawe is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Southern Queensland, specialising in mathematics curriculum and pedagogy. She has over twenty years of experience within Queensland schools as a teacher, advisory teacher, Deputy, and Principal. In the tertiary space, Melissa is passionate about student success and inclusive access to education. Melissa is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has won a number of teaching awards. These include an Australian Award for University Teaching citation for supporting students learning, an ADCET Accessibility in Action award, an ASCILITE innovation award, and a Commonwealth Bank teaching award.


Dr Ian Davis
Dr Cecily Jensen-Clayton
Dr Cecily Jensen-Clayton has experience in adult education settings and TESOL in Australia and internationally. She has worked previously with a range of community members in mentoring programs including women in rural Queensland. Her research interests lie in the field of Futures Thinking, the topic of her second PhD under completion at the University of Southern Queensland
